Requirements

Must:
• Strong Python proficiency and comfort building automation around APIs and tooling. • Solid Linux debugging skills (shell, processes, permissions, networking basics). • Experience with build and packaging workflows, or strong intuition and desire to go deep quickly (Python packaging, native extensions, CI). • Comfort working with or around C++ build systems (CMake/Bazel/Make or similar) and the realities of toolchains. • Product-minded engineering: you care about reducing friction and you ship improvements that change day-to-day work. • High ownership: you can take a messy workflow, clarify what matters, and deliver a robust golden path. Great-to-haves • Experience shipping Python packages with native code (wheels, ABI issues, platform matrices). • Experience building small internal web tools end-to-end. • Practical experience integrating LLM tools into workflows without compromising privacy, traceability, or reliability. • Familiarity with Docker and CI/CD (GitHub Actions, self-hosted runners, release automation). • Strong written communication (docs, runbooks, onboarding guides).

Responsibilities

We’re hiring a Software Delivery & AI Automation Engineer to make Plaquette effortless to build, package, release, and deploy in customer environments, and to multiply our team by eliminating recurring operational work through pragmatic automation (including AI-assisted workflows). This is not an SRE/on-call production role: Plaquette is delivered to customers on-prem as a Python package with C++ simulation backends, and we run minimal hosted infrastructure. Your impact comes from making software delivery reliable, and from building internal tooling that boosts team productivity and saves the team real time. A good fit is someone who enjoys both: • the unglamorous but high-leverage work of build/release engineering and customer installability, and • tinkering with the latest AI tools, e.g. to quickly build small but end-to-end tools that solve real problems. What you will do: • Ship Plaquette reliably to customer environments: - Make builds reproducible and reliable for a Python product with native C++ simulators (toolchains, CI, platform quirks). - Own and improve our packaging/release pipeline (wheels/sdists, versioning, automated checks, release confidence). - Improve developer golden paths: fast local setup, consistent builds, actionable CI failures. - Reduce customer onboarding friction with robust install docs, environment checks, and more. - Make lightweight licensing and auth flows stable and predictable. • Multiply the team with internal AI automation: - Ship small internal apps and workflows that eliminate recurring overhead (e.g., recruiting pipelines, spreadsheet tooling, structured intake forms, internal portals). - AI-powered integrations of tools we use (GitHub, Linear, Google Workspace/CSV exports, etc.) and turn manual glue work into reliable systems. - Create agentic workflows that assist software development and other operational tasks by drafting, reviewing, improving, and suggesting changes, backed by clear completion criteria, traceable logs, and explicit human review checkpoints. - Stay up to date on new LLM models and tooling releases, continuously evaluating them to identify options that could materially improve team speed, quality, or cost.

Description

About QC Design QC Design is a quantum computing software startup helping quantum hardware teams build scalable, useful quantum computers. We build Plaquette™, a design tool for fault-tolerant quantum computing (FTQC), think of it as an AutoCAD-style software for quantum error correction (QEC) and fault tolerance. Plaquette brings together quantum error-correction code libraries, hardware-realistic noise models, decoding workflows, and multiple simulation backends so teams can design and evaluate FTQC architectures under realistic hardware constraints. Our customers include over 10% of the worlds quantum hardware companies across all hardware platforms. They rely on Plaquette to explore architectures, compare tradeoffs, and plan hardware-efficient paths to logical qubits. We continuously evolve Plaquette based on what customers need next. We are a 12-person team of scientists and engineers from across 6 countries. Our strengths are in quantum software, hardware, and fault tolerance, and we operate with a strong ship-and-learn loop with real customers. What we offer • A chance to shape the tool used by many of the world's top quantum companies. • You will have a lot of autonomy, and you will see direct impact quickly (your efforts will make the whole team faster and customer delivery smoother). • You will get to experiment with the latest and greatest AI tools of all kinds! • Competitive salary and exceptionally high stock options. • Flexible working hours and hybrid work options. • Relocation support to Ulm if you're moving here for the role. • A supportive environment with strong technical peers and real customer feedback loops. Location In person in Ulm, Germany. Hybrid options are available. Deadline 11:59pm on 21 February 2026 (Anywhere on Earth)
